This full-width rear extension transforms a suburban home with an attached side garage, unifying the two elements into a single, cohesive form. The original garage projected into the garden beyond the rear elevation of the house, creating an uneven footprint and fragmented layout. The new extension rationalises the plan by adding a utility room behind the garage and an open-plan living area to the rear of the main house - forming a generous, connected family space.

Planning officers initially resisted the full-width approach, citing design guidance favouring stepped elevations. Through careful dialogue, we developed a refined proposal that maintained the full-width design while slightly reducing overall depth to address their concerns. The approved scheme delivers a balanced, contemporary addition that respects the original dwelling’s proportions while enhancing light and connection to the garden.
